Google bot myth exploded!

So a couple of weeks ago I wrote a blog post about google bots and how they trawl the Internet collecting information to better index stuff on the web.

I also mentioned that I was pretty sure that those first couple of views you get when you list a new item were more than likely bots.

Well last week a strange thing happened to me that has never happened before. I listed a new item, there she is below.

And for every view I had a heart! Now as far as I am aware Bots don't give hearts so that meant that every one that viewed my item was a real flesh and blood person.

At one point though I had more hearts than views which I didn't quite understand as surely you have to see the item before you can decide to like it. This really restored my faith in the Internet and in people too, but then it made me think.

What is it about this item that prompted so many hearts? Was it the photo? The setting or background? Was it that I listed it in a different category than normal, thus attracting different viewers?

I have no idea but I am happy that finally I have made something that people like. The next step is to make something that people like enough to buy...lol.

I've been told that you just need to hang in there, you will find that special something and then the flood gate of orders will open. I wish you luck in finding your niche :) I still haven't found mine yet.

I've often wondered about those first 20 or so views that seem to pop in so quickly...

I think your photo is fabulous! You've really captured the romantic, subtle vibe of that particular piece! Beautiful!

I just assumed the views you get when you first list an item is from people looking at the recently listed items...
It's great you had so many hearts! :)

It is a lovely picture. I think I have the same shawl. As far as getting more hearts than views - people can click a heart on a picture when it shows up in any list - someone's favorites or a search or even your shop. So they don't actually have to go to the page for that listing before giving it a heart. Hope that helps.

I love the flower. It's beautiful. Etsy is very competitive, since there are so many sellers. But be patient, it only takes one person to spread the word about your wonderful creations!

I think that your item is beautiful first off...I also think that SEO has a lot to do with those "google bots" you wrote about...though computers indexing for better search results is what a lot of search engines do constantly. Congrats on all the hearts too! I hope that you get lots of sales from your awesome product and clean, crisp pictures.

Yeah it's a really lovely photo, well designed and the flower is just romantic and pretty as well. We all see how much photography really sells an item more than just about anything else so Im not surprised that it got so many hearts.
